The Golden Lion Circle was founded by Messrs Liow Yan Man, Wong Sam Yue (Snr.) and Wong Tik Fa in 1955 and is the oldest cultural association promoting Chinese culture across martial arts, dragon and lion dances in Mauritius. The club was the only association practicing martial arts (previously it was known as kung fu) in Mauritius at that period and to-day, the Golden Lion Circle is still one of the most active clubs in the island.

The Association was registered on March 3, 1997 under the provisions of the Registrar of Associations Act 1978 under reference 4998.

The Golden Lion Circle has (and is) also been very active at national level in participating in almost all of the festivities on the occasion of national day, municipalities activities, inauguration of new hotels/restaurants and other public and private institutions. We also took part actively in the World Chinese Conference held in Mauritius in April 1992 and the Dragon Boat Festival at Caudan Waterfront.

On the international scene, the Club has performed the dragon and lion dances in Reunion, Seychelles, Rodrigues, the Netherlands and South Korea. The Golden Lion Circle also participated in the World Lion Dance Competition in Genting Highlands, Malaysia in August 2002 and July 2010, where our rank was 16th out of 28 participants of different countries. We are also member in the famous Confederation Sarping lion dance.

Today the Golden Lion Circle has about 40 active members and amongst them are many young and dedicated members.
